Obverse description Youthful beardless head of Heracles in right-facing profile, enveloped in the scalp of the Nemean lion, the beast's gaping jaws framing the hero's crown and the knotted forepaws falling across the neck. The modelling is vigorous and high-relief, with finely rendered curling hair visible beneath the lion-skin headdress. The eye is rendered in the archaic-classical tradition with a pronounced brow ridge, and the lips are slightly parted. The flan is broad and slightly irregular, consistent with Amphipolis mint production of the early Macedonian royal series.
