Obverse description Facing lion scalp rendered in high relief, depicted frontally with a broad, powerful muzzle, open mouth revealing fangs, and a full flowing mane radiating symmetrically around the face. The deeply modelled features display a fierce, naturalistic expression characteristic of high Classical Greek die-cutting. The broad flat field surrounding the design is plain, with no legend or border. The artistic treatment reflects the accomplished engraving tradition of the Samian mint in the late fifth and early fourth centuries BC.
