Nisyros, a volcanic island in the southern Aegean, struck coins only briefly and in small quantities during the late 3rd and early 2nd centuries BC — likely tied to the commercial disruptions following Rome's decisive intervention in Macedonian affairs and the subsequent reshuffling of Aegean trade routes. Price 2508 is among the scarcer island tetradrachms of the period, with relatively few specimens recorded in major collections.
The issue follows the posthumous Alexandrine coinage tradition that continued circulating through much of the eastern Mediterranean long after Alexander's death, minted locally to facilitate regional commerce rather than as royal proclamation.
