Reverse description A charioteer, holding a kentron (goad) in the right hand and the reins in the left, drives a fast quadriga to the left in dynamic composition. Above the horses, Nike flies rightward to crown the charioteer with a wreath, an iconographic motif celebrating victory at the games. In the exergue, the ethnic legend ΚΑΤΑΝΑΙΩΝ appears above the figure of a fish swimming left, identifying the issuing city of Katane. The scene exemplifies the celebrated chariot-race reverse type common to the great Sicilian mints of the late fifth century BC.
