| Beschrijving keerzijde | A majestic swan stands in three-quarter view facing left, its sinuous neck gracefully curved and its large wings dramatically spread and raised, rendered with exceptional detail in individual feather groupings. The bird stands on both feet upon the flat field, conveying a powerful sense of arrested motion. The surrounding legend in Greek letters, reading ΜΑΝΔΡΩΝΑΞ ΚΛΑΖΟ, identifies the magistrate Mandronax and the issuing city of Klazomenai, distributed around the periphery of the flan. The engraving of the swan is of outstanding artistic quality, consistent with the celebrated die-cutters of Ionian civic coinage in the early fourth century BC. |
