Reverse description The reverse presents a formal epigraphic and decorative composition within a shallow incuse square. An inner linear square frames a stylized grapevine bearing five pendant grape clusters, emblematic of Mende's celebrated wine-producing region. The ethnic legend ΜΕΝΔΑΙΟΝ is distributed across the four sides of the inner linear square as MEN-Δ-A-IO-N, identifying the issuing city. The incuse square technique is consistent with archaic Macedonian and northern Aegean minting practice of the fifth century BC.
