| Beschrijving keerzijde | Deep incuse square enclosing a naturalistic grapevine with spreading tendrils, large bunches of grapes, and broad leaves rendered in fine relief against the recessed field, emblematic of Mende's celebrated wine-producing region. A serpent or kantharos element appears at the lower centre of the vine composition. The city ethnic ΜΕΝΔΑΙΟΝ is disposed across the four corners of the incuse square in Greek majuscules: ΜΕΝ across the top and ΔΑΙ-ΟΝ along the sides and bottom, a characteristic arrangement of the Mendean tetradrachm series. The incuse technique and vegetal ornament are hallmarks of northern Aegean mint practice in the fifth century BC. |
