Ziz — the Punic name for what Greeks called Panormos, modern Palermo — operated as a Carthaginian administrative center on Sicily's northern coast, and its coinage was struck primarily to pay mercenary troops during the prolonged military campaigns against the Sicilian Greeks. This tetradrachm falls within the period of Carthage's most aggressive Sicilian expansion, which saw Himera, Selinus, and Akragas all sacked in rapid succession between 409 and 406 BC.
Jenkins' die study remains the essential reference for this series, distinguishing obverse and reverse pairings across a relatively small production run.
