| Reverse description | Bearded male head in left profile, identified as the river-god Hipparis, wearing a plain taenia; his long, flowing hair radiates dramatically behind his head in wavy strands. A small serpent (or fish) appears before his face in the field, a common attribute linking the deity to local Sicilian waterways. The encircling Greek legend KAMAPINAIΩN partially frames the portrait, distributed around the periphery of the die. The modelling of the beard and facial features reflects the high-relief, naturalistic style characteristic of Kamarinaian coinage of the late fifth century BC. |
