Reverse description Facing head of the nymph Arethusa turned to right, rendered in the refined early Classical style characteristic of Syracusan coinage circa 460 BC. She wears a pearl diadem, a beaded necklace, and a pendant drop earring; her hair is dressed in a krobylos, bound up and falling forward over the diadem in loose locks. Four dolphins swim clockwise in the surrounding field, symbolising the sacred spring of Arethusa on Ortygia. The ethnic legend ΣVRΑΚΟΣΙΟΝ arcs around the design.
