| Description de l’avers | The nymph Messana depicted as a charioteer, clad in a long chiton, driving a biga of mules to the left while grasping the reins in both hands. A winged Nike flies to the right above the scene, descending to crown the nymph with a wreath. In the exergue, a fish is rendered below the exergual line, and the engraver's signature ΣIMIN appears in minute letters upon the exergual line itself. The composition exemplifies the finest tradition of late fifth-century BCE Sicilian die-cutting, combining dynamic movement with refined detail. |

| Description du revers | A hare shown in full spring to the left occupies the central field, conveying vigorous motion through the extended posture of its limbs. Beneath the hare, an eagle with closed wings perches to the left atop a rocky outcrop, its head turned downward as it devours a serpent clutched in its talons. The ethnic legend MEΣΣANION is disposed around the field, identifying the issuing city. The reverse design, pairing the hare and eagle, constitutes an emblematic device closely associated with the coinage of Messana during this period. |
