| Reverse description | A bounding stag leaps to the right in high relief, its antlers prominently rendered and its musculature finely articulated. Below the stag, in the lower field, appears a laureate head of the nymph Pelorias facing left, identifiable by her necklace and carefully detailed hair. The ethnic legend ΜΕΣΣΑΝΙΟΝ is inscribed retrograde around the circumference of the field, identifying the issuing city of Messana. The composition is enclosed within a dotted border, and the overall style reflects the high artistic quality associated with the Sicilian die-cutting tradition of the late fifth century BC. |
