Kyme was among the most prominent cities of Aeolis, a region on the western Anatolian coast whose Greek settlements maintained considerable autonomy through shifting Seleucid and later Attalid overlordship. By the mid-second century BC, Pergamene influence was consolidating across the region following Rome's reorganization of Asia Minor after the Peace of Apamea in 188 BC. These tetradrachms were likely struck as Kyme navigated that political realignment — asserting civic identity through coinage at a moment when many Aeolian cities were quietly surrendering monetary independence to Pergamon.
SNG Copenhagen 104 is the standard reference point for this type, placing the issue firmly within the magistrate series attributable to this decade.
