| Beschrijving keerzijde | The forepart of the river-god Gelas is depicted to the right, rendered as a man-headed bull — a canonical iconographic type for Sicilian river deities — with a bearded, horned head turned in profile to the right and the powerful bovine body shown in three-quarter view. The musculature of the foreleg and shoulder is finely modelled in high relief, consistent with the sophisticated die-engraving of this period. The legend ΓΕΛΑΣ is inscribed in the upper field, reading from left to right in archaic Greek capitals. The type proclaims the civic identity of the mint city through its eponymous river deity. |
