Obverse description Facing right, the bearded head of Dionysos rendered in high relief in the archaic style, his luxuriant curling beard and flowing locks depicted with fine engraving. The god wears a wreath of ivy and grape clusters crowning his head, emblematic of his divine association with viticulture. The flan is irregular and slightly convex, characteristic of hand-struck Thasian coinage of the early Classical period. The portrait occupies the full field with no legend or border, conveying a powerful, frontal presence typical of Thasian artistic convention.
