Tetradrachm

The Thraco-Macedonian region produced a remarkable cluster of autonomous silver coinages in the late archaic period, many of them issued by tribal groups or small poleis whose civic identities remain unresolved. Attribution has been contested since the nineteenth century — the Asyut hoard, buried around 475 BC in Egypt, contained multiple pieces of this type alongside coins from Akanthos, Mende, and Eion, confirming broad Aegean commercial reach but doing little to settle the question of origin. Several candidates have been proposed, none conclusively.
