| Beschrijving voorzijde | Left-facing bust of Arethusa, the nymph of Syracuse, depicted in fine three-quarter relief with elaborately rendered wavy hair bound by a beaded diadem and adorned with a pearl necklace and pendant earrings. Four dolphins encircle the head in the field, a hallmark motif of Syracusan coinage referencing the sea. The legend ΣYPAKOΣIΩN arcs around the upper border. The engraver's signature ΠΑΡΜΕ appears in the lower exergual area. The portrait exhibits the refined, idealized style characteristic of the great Syracusan die-engravers of the late fifth century BC. |
