Obverse description Facing head of Helios, god of the sun, rendered in fine early Rhodian style with the face turned very slightly to the right. The hair radiates outward from the crown in thick, naturalistic waves and curls framing the face on all sides, suggesting the solar rays of the deity. The modeling of the facial features is accomplished with exceptional plasticity, exhibiting large almond-shaped eyes, a straight nose, and full lips characteristic of the late fifth-century BC Greek artistic canon. The neck is visible at the base of the bust, and the field is otherwise plain.
