| Reverse description | A large square incuse depression frames a symmetrically arranged grapevine, its central trunk dividing into arching branches bearing multiple clusters of grapes rendered in high relief against the recessed field; the vine's foliage is depicted along the upper register. The ethnic legend ΜΕΝΔΑΙΟΝ is distributed around the outer margins of the square frame, with individual letters placed at each corner and along the sides in early Greek capitals. The bold, geometric arrangement of the inscription and the naturalistic vine motif together reflect the celebrated wine-producing identity of the city of Mende. |
