Obverse description Dionysus, nude and ivy-wreathed, rides in a relaxed semi-recumbent posture atop a walking donkey proceeding to the left, his right arm extended forward and his left hand resting on the animal's flank; a chlamys drapes loosely across his thighs. Beneath the donkey's raised foreleg, a small kantharos (wine cup) is depicted on the ground plane, and in the lower right field a raven perches facing left. The whole composition is enclosed within a beaded border and rendered in the fine archaic-transitional style characteristic of Macedonian mint work of the mid-fifth century BC.
