Myrina, an Aeolian city on the western coast of Asia Minor, was among the leagues of cities granted renewed autonomy following Rome's defeat of Perseus of Macedon at Pydna in 168 BC. The tetradrachms issued in the decades immediately after belong to a distinct cistophoric-influenced tradition but retain older Hellenistic weight standards — a deliberate monetary conservatism that kept them compatible with wider Aegean trade networks.
The Boston MFA specimen (1652) has long served as the die-study anchor for Sacks's classification of this series.
