| Obverse description | Charioteer depicted in profile, holding the kentron (goad) in his right hand and the reins in his left, driving a biga of mules at a brisk pace to the left. The figures are rendered in the fine early Classical style characteristic of Sicilian coinage, with careful attention to anatomical detail in the mules and drapery of the driver. In the exergue below the ground line, two dolphins are shown confronted, a civic emblem closely associated with the maritime city of Messana. |

| Reverse description | A hare, depicted in a vigorous springing gallop to the left, occupies the central field, rendered with naturalistic musculature and elongated ears characteristic of the finest Sicilian engraving of the early Classical period. Above the hare, a dove flies to the left with wings spread, serving as an additional civic or religious symbol. Below the hare, a single grain ear is shown, referencing the agricultural fertility of the region. The ethnic legend ΜΕΣΣΑΝΙΩΝ is inscribed along the lower exergual line, identifying the issuing community of Messana. |
