| Beschrijving keerzijde | A linear incuse square frames a naturalistic vine bearing four prominent bunches of grapes, the central motif of Mende's celebrated coinage and a direct allusion to the city's renowned wine production. The ethnic legend ΜΕΝΔΑΙΟΝ is distributed in four segments around the exterior of the linear square, reading ΜΕΝ – ΔΑ – ΙΟ – Ν. The entire design is set within a deeply impressed incuse square, a hallmark of early Classical Greek struck coinage. The rendering of the vine is detailed and crisp, reflecting the high artistic standard of Mendean die engravers of the fifth century BC. |
