Obverse description A lion attacks a bull from behind, the bull kneeling to left in a posture of submission while the predator bites savagely into its hindquarters. The composition is rendered in bold, high relief, conveying dramatic energy characteristic of Archaic and early Classical Greek die-cutting. A dolphin appears in the exergue, swimming either to the left or to the right depending on the die variety. The field is otherwise plain, focusing attention entirely on the powerful predator-prey group.
