Leontini, a Chalcidian colony on Sicily's eastern plain, minted this series at a moment when the city was navigating uneasy alliances between Syracuse and the Athenian sphere. The tetradrachms of this period precede Athens' catastrophic Sicilian Expedition of 415–413 BC, during which Leontini's political fate became directly entangled with Athenian imperial ambition — the city had sent envoys to Athens as early as 427 BC appealing for military support against Syracusan pressure.
The dies of this series show strong stylistic debt to Syracuse's contemporary coinage, unsurprising given geographic proximity, yet Leontinoi maintained a distinct civic identity in its issues. The SNG ANS and Lloyd references bracket a recognized die progression within the type.
