| Reverse description | Forepart of a roaring lion facing left, rendered with exceptional naturalistic energy: the mane is elaborately detailed with incised striations, the mouth is open revealing teeth and tongue, and the forelegs are thrust forward dynamically. Four olive leaves or berry sprigs are disposed in the field around the lion, one in each quadrant. The ethnic legend ΛΕΟΝΤΙΝΟΝ is arranged in the field, divided around the central type, and reads in retrograde or segmented form as ΛΕΟ-ΝΤΙ-ΝΟ-Ν. The overall composition exemplifies the bold, vigorous style of early Classical Sicilian coinage. |
