| Obverse description | Facing left, the bearded head of Dionysos rendered in high relief in the archaic-to-early classical style, his long flowing locks cascading over his shoulders. The deity wears a wreath of ivy and grape clusters set upon his brow, characteristic iconography of the Thasian wine-god type. Facial features are boldly modelled with a pronounced brow, deep-set eye, and full beard rendered with fine linear detail. The coin field is plain, with no surrounding legend or border. The strike is vigorous, typical of the hammered coinage of Thasos during the late fifth to early fourth century BC. |
