| Beschrijving keerzijde | Head of the nymph Arethusa facing right, rendered in fine Early Classical style with a high degree of artistic refinement. Her hair is elaborately dressed with pearl-dot ornaments and secured in a net or sphendone, falling in wavy locks behind the neck, with a circular earring visible at the ear. Four dolphins swim around her portrait in the surrounding field, alluding to the mythological freshwater spring of Arethusa on the island of Ortygia at Syracuse. The ethnic legend ΣΥΡΑΚΟΣΙΟΝ (of the Syracusans) is inscribed around the periphery of the field in archaic Greek characters. |
