| Reverse description | A hare leaping vigorously to the right in high relief, its elongated body and outstretched limbs conveying dynamic motion within a dotted border. The ethnic legend MEƧƧANION is arranged around the field, with the sigma rendered in retrograde form (SS retrograde), a characteristic feature of early Messanan coinage. The letter C (lunate sigma or koppa) appears above the hare in the upper field. The reverse die-work is of accomplished archaic Sicilian craftsmanship, consistent with the finest engravers active at Messana in the mid-fifth century BC. |
