Obverse description Dionysos, bearded and draped in a himation, reclines to left upon the back of a donkey walking to right; the god holds a kantharos in his raised right hand while his left arm, bearing an ivy wreath, rests upon the animal's back. An ivy wreath is placed upon the donkey's head. On the ground line to the right, a crow perches to right within an ivy plant. The composition is rendered in a bold, archaic Greek style with strong plastic modelling.

Reverse description A stylised grape vine, centrally rooted, spreads symmetrically across a recessed incuse square, its sinuous branches bearing broad leaves, curling tendrils, and five prominent hanging bunches of grapes rendered in high relief. The ethnic legend ΜΕΝΔΑΙΟΝ is distributed among the quadrants formed by the vine's branches, reading across the field in Greek characters. The overall design conveys the city's renowned viticultural identity in a striking and well-organised composition.
