Kyme was the dominant city of Aeolis throughout the Hellenistic period, and these tetradrachms were struck during the decades following Rome's reorganization of western Asia Minor after the defeat of Antiochus III. The city retained enough autonomy under the Attalid sphere to issue substantial silver coinage, though the precise civic authority behind individual emissions remains debated among specialists working the SNG Copenhagen series.
The Copenhagen reference places this piece within a well-documented group, but die studies by later scholars have suggested the emission sequence is wider than early catalogers assumed.
