Laodikeia ad Lycum was founded by the Seleucid king Antiochus II around 261–253 BC and named for his wife Laodike, but the city's coinage flourished most conspicuously after 133 BC, when the region passed to Rome following Attalus III's bequest of the Pergamene kingdom. These tetradrachms belong to that post-Attalid phase, when Laodikeian civic issues operated under Roman provincial oversight — a transitional monetary arrangement that gave the city unusual latitude to strike silver at a weight standard increasingly at odds with the declining cistophoric norm elsewhere in Asia Minor.
