Obverse description A powerful lion attacks a kneeling bull from behind, savagely biting into the bull's hindquarters; both figures are rendered in high relief and oriented to the right in a dynamic, naturalistic composition characteristic of early Macedonian coinage. The muscular bodies of the two animals are rendered with considerable artistic skill, conveying both movement and tension. In the exergue below the main design, a cantharus (drinking cup) is flanked on either side by an ivy leaf, each leaf pointing outward, serving as a civic symbol of the issuing city.
