| Reverse description | A fast quadriga driven to the left by a charioteer clad in a chiton, who holds the kentron and reins with controlled authority. Above the chariot, Nike flies to the right, extending a wreath to crown the victorious charioteer in a composition of dynamic baroque energy. The engraver's signature KIMΩN appears on the exergual line, directly above the exergue. In the exergue, the ethnic legend ΣYPAKOΣIΩN is inscribed alongside a leftward-facing ear of barley, a recurring emblem of Syracusan civic pride. The entire reverse composition exemplifies the zenith of fifth-century Greek die-engraving artistry. |
