Additional information

Mende was one of the most prolific wine-producing cities in the ancient Aegean, and its coinage circulated widely through trade networks stretching from the Black Sea to Egypt. The city's prosperity in this period rested almost entirely on amphorae exports, which gave Mendean silver unusual commercial reach for a relatively minor Chalcidian settlement.

Noe 52 falls within the mature phase of Mendean tetradrachm production, before the city's eventual submission to Olynthos disrupted its independent minting. The series shows considerable die variation across specimens, and individual examples are sometimes traceable to specific die pairings documented in Noe's foundational 1926 study.
