Reverse description Facing scalp of a roaring lion, depicted frontally with bared teeth, a wrinkled muzzle, and a full mane rendered in bold relief, the powerful image serving as the civic emblem of Leontini. Surrounding the lion's head are four barleycorns or grain seeds arranged symmetrically in the field, alluding to the agricultural wealth of the Leontine plain. The ethnic legend ΛΕΟΝΤΙΝΟΝ is inscribed in Greek characters, distributed around the central device. The composition reflects the accomplished die-cutting tradition of mid-fifth-century Sicily.
