| Obverse description | Bearded head of Herakles facing right, clad in the Nemean lion skin headdress, the scalp tied beneath the chin with the forepaws knotted at the neck. The rendering closely follows the Macedonian prototype of Alexander III, with finely engraved curling locks emerging from beneath the lion skin. The portrait is set within a plain, slightly irregular circular field, without inscription or border legend. |

Punic silver tetradrachms of this period were struck by Carthaginian military commanders to pay mercenary troops during the prolonged campaigns in Sicily — coinage produced at field mints or semi-mobile installations rather than at Carthage itself. The issuing authority remains unresolved; "uncertain Punic mint" reflects genuine scholarly disagreement about whether production occurred in western Sicily, Sardinia, or North Africa.
The Sicilian wars of the late fourth century burned through silver at a ferocious rate. Timoleon's campaigns had only recently ended, and the island remained contested ground when these coins entered circulation.
