| Beschrijving keerzijde | Head of the nymph Arethusa in three-quarter facing profile, turned slightly to the left, rendered with exceptional naturalistic refinement and fluid, wavy hair bound with a reed wreath. Four dolphins swim encircling her head in the field, a traditional iconographic attribute linking her to the sacred spring of Ortygia. The inscription ΣΥΡΑΚΟΣΙΩΝ arcs around the upper field, identifying the issuing city. The engraving, attributed to Phrygillos and signed with his abbreviated signature ΦPΥ in the reverse legend, exemplifies the high artistic achievement of the Syracusan coin-engraving tradition. |
