| 表面の説明 | Radiate and cuirassed bust of Emperor Probus facing right, depicted with characteristic Alexandrian artistic style. The emperor's bust is rendered with military cuirass visible at the truncation, crowned with a radiate crown of solar rays. The Greek legend surrounds the bust, reading from upper left and continuing around the periphery of the flan. The portrait exhibits the bold, somewhat crude engraving style typical of late third-century Alexandrian provincial coinage. |

Probus spent much of his reign fighting on multiple frontiers simultaneously — Germanic tribes on the Rhine and Danube, usurpers in the East — yet maintained Alexandria's mint output with reasonable consistency. This issue falls in his fifth regnal year, a period when the emperor was consolidating control after suppressing the revolt of Saturninus in Syria. The potin alloy by this point was so debased from its earlier billon ancestors that calling it a silver coin was largely a legal fiction Egypt's population had long since accepted.
