| Obverse description | Draped bust of Tigranes III facing right, wearing the distinctive Armenian tiara with five points tied with a diadem. The effigy displays slight drapery at the shoulder, rendered in the Hellenistic portraiture tradition. The Greek letter A appears in the left field, serving as a mint mark for Artaxata. |

| Additional information |
Tigranes III ruled Armenia as a Roman client king, installed by Augustus following decades of dynastic instability that had seen the kingdom contested between Rome and Parthia. His coinage, including this small bronze, represents one of the few tangible artifacts of a reign about which literary sources are almost entirely silent — Josephus mentions him only in passing, and no Armenian account survives.
Kovacs 172 is among the scarcer attributed types of this reign.
