Tigranes III ruled Armenia as a Roman client king, installed by Augustus following decades of dynastic instability that had seen the kingdom contested between Rome and Parthia. His coinage, including this small bronze, represents one of the few tangible artifacts of a reign about which literary sources are almost entirely silent — Josephus mentions him only in passing, and no Armenian account survives.
Kovacs 172 is among the scarcer attributed types of this reign.
