Amisos, a Greek colony on the Black Sea coast of Pontus, issued bronze coinage under Mithridates VI as part of his broader effort to project Hellenistic royal authority across his kingdom without formally breaking from the city's civic minting traditions. The result was a municipally-styled bronze that circulated through one of antiquity's most commercially active Black Sea ports.
Mithridates VI ruled for over half a century before Rome finally cornered him — he outlasted three Roman commanders sent to destroy him, survived multiple betrayals, and died in 63 BC at Panticapaeum after his own son Pharnaces turned against him.
