Mithradates II ruled the Parthian Empire at its greatest territorial extent, pushing west into Mesopotamia and east toward India while simultaneously forcing Rome to acknowledge Parthia as an equal power — the two empires met formally on the Euphrates around 96 BC, a diplomatic event the Romans found deeply uncomfortable to record. His bronze coinage is unusually varied in fabric and type, reflecting the decentralized mint operations across a suddenly vast domain. Sellwood 24.33 sits among the earlier emissions of his reign, before the titulature on his silver settled into the grand "King of Kings" formula he eventually adopted.
