Antiochos III was in the middle of reasserting Seleucid authority over the eastern satrapies when this issue was struck — a decade-long campaign that would earn him the epithet "the Great" and briefly reconstitute something approaching the original Macedonian conquests. Bronze civic coinage of this period functioned as administrative infrastructure as much as currency, keeping markets and garrisons liquid across an empire being stitched back together by force.
SC1 971 is attributed to the mint at Antioch-on-the-Orontes, the dynastic heartland.
