Reverse description A prominent cross pattee or cross potent occupies the center of the reverse field, with the letters R, E, X arranged around the cross, reading REX, identifying the issuer as king. The cross is rendered in bold, slightly irregular strokes consistent with hand-hammered manufacture. The legend elements are distributed within the quadrants or around the perimeter of the cross, following the formula common to Crusader deniers of the late 12th century. The flan is irregular and the strike is uneven, characteristic of the primitive minting conditions prevailing in Cyprus during Richard's brief tenure.
