Obverse description Nimbate bust of Christ Pantokrator facing forward, depicted in three-quarter length, cradling the Book of Gospels in the left arm and raising the right hand in the gesture of benediction. The nimbus is plain or cross-bearing depending on the die. The figure is rendered in a hieratic Byzantine style with stylized drapery. The Greek inscription IC XC (abbreviated form of Iesous Christos) appears in the field to either side of the bust.

The emperor holds a cross-tipped scepter in the right hand and a globus cruciger in the left, the standard iconographic attributes of Byzantine imperial authority. The inscription IW DECPOTH, an abbreviated rendering of the Greek Ioannes Despotes (John the Despot), appears in the field, the title Despotes denoting supreme imperial rank.
