| Beschrijving keerzijde | Frontal crowned bust of Emperor Alexios I Komnenos, depicted wearing imperial loros adorned with jewelled decoration in the Byzantine court tradition. The emperor holds a jewelled sceptre in his right hand and an orb surmounted by a cross in his left, symbols of imperial authority. The facial features are rendered in a simplified, hieratic style typical of hammered provincial bronze coinage of the Komnenian period. A partial Greek legend surrounds the bust, abbreviated from the invocatory formula 'Kyrie filate Alexi Despoti' (Lord guard Alexios the Despot). The inscription and bust are struck on an irregularly shaped flan consistent with Thessalonican mint production of this series. |
