Reverse description Facing crowned bust of Emperor Alexios I Komnenos, draped in the imperial loros, a jewelled ceremonial garment. The emperor holds a labarum staff in his right hand and a globus cruciger in his left, emblems of imperial and divine authority. A Greek legend, partially legible and variable across specimens, flanks the bust in the field and refers to the emperor by name and title. The portrait is rendered in the hieratic frontal style typical of Byzantine imperial coinage following the monetary reform of 1092.
