Beschrijving voorzijde Two confronted donkey heads rendered in rudimentary relief, facing one another across the central axis of the flan. The heads are depicted in profile, with elongated snouts meeting at the center of the field, and characteristic long ears rising toward the upper rim. The style is archaic and schematic, consistent with the miniature coinage of the Chalcidian mint at Mende during the early Classical period. No inscription or legend is present. The flan is irregular and slightly convex.

Aanvullende informatie

Mende was one of the more prosperous Chalcidian colonies on the Pallene peninsula, its wealth built almost entirely on wine exports — Mendean wine was traded as far as Egypt and the Black Sea. These fractional pieces circulated alongside the city's better-known didrachms and were almost certainly used in everyday market transactions rather than long-distance commerce. At 0.2g, the loss of a single coin represented negligible value, which explains in part why so few survive in anything approaching fine condition.
