| Beschrijving voorzijde | Central field depicts a devotional scene in which a kneeling armored figure, representing Duke William I of Gonzaga, receives a palm frond from Saint Barbara, who stands at left holding a tall cross. The saint is shown in flowing robes with a nimbus, and the duke kneels in full armor in a posture of piety and submission. The composition is rendered in a high-relief Renaissance style characteristic of Mantuan coinage of the mid-sixteenth century. The circular Latin legend surrounds the scene, reading NIHIL ISTO TRISTE RECEPTO, meaning 'Nothing sad after receiving this.' |
