Reverse description Central device consisting of the heraldic shield of Reggio (Regium Lepidi), formed in a distinctive lobe-pointed shape resembling a horse's head, charged with a plain cross dividing the escutcheon into four quarters. The shield is rendered with ornate cusped and foliate embellishments at its upper corners and base, consistent with Renaissance decorative convention. The circumferential legend REGIVM LEPIDI, the ancient Roman name for Reggio Emilia, is distributed around the periphery of the field. The reverse design is bold and well-centred on the flan, with the shield filling the inner field. The coin's edge shows slight irregularity consistent with hand-hammered manufacture.
